Spiderman used to be the top character of Marvel but his last movie Amazing Spiderman 2 was a disapointment. More over other comicbook characters that used be on the fringe of Marvel's comic universe are now increasing in sales at both theatres and in comics.
What is happening to our favorite wall crawler? Why is his popularity plummeting?
My feeling is that generally this has to do with SONY controlling Spiderman's film destiny. Marvel has done such a great job with its interconnected Marvel Cinematic Universe that characters outside of it, our at a disadvantage.
The question is how far will Spiderman fall in popularity. Marvel seems to have the incentive to focus on other characters that it controls in full.
Once Spiderman was a very unique and fresh character and he took the world by storm. Amazing Spiderman 2 was a good movie, but in some ways felt tired, generic, and worn. In comparison, the movie Guardians of the Galaxy was fresh, daring and full of energy. The comparison is a sad one, because previous to the Guardians of the Galaxy many comic nerds did not even know who they were. Spiderman seems to be losing battles at the box office, that he would normally win easily.
